The Future of Educational Feedback Is Not Artificial Intelligence—Part IV

Updated: 1 day ago

How Artificial Intelligence Works

Despite the excitement surrounding AI's potential, its unpredictability remains a significant concern, particularly in fields like education where accuracy and trust are paramount. While many people have a general understanding of AI’s capabilities—such as generating reports, grading assignments, or offering feedback—few truly grasp how AI processes information, including its own developers. This lack of transparency becomes especially troubling when AI begins to exhibit what is known as a “hallucination,” where, due to insufficient or low-quality data, it generates false or fabricated information.

The issue of hallucinations in AI raises serious questions about the reliability of AI-generated feedback. If an AI system is prone to producing erroneous or misleading output when data is lacking, how can educators or students trust the guidance will be accurate or beneficial? In a classroom setting, in which personalized and precise feedback is crucial for student development, the risk of such errors could have significant negative consequences. Therefore, teachers would be compelled to meticulously review every piece of AI-generated content, searching for potential errors and omissions—a task that negates much of the supposed time-saving benefits that AI promises.

This time-consuming flaw using AI-based feedback burdens teachers with an additional layer of responsibility. Ultimately, teachers want a turnkey solution—a tool that streamlines the process by working seamlessly while providing accurate, reliable feedback without the need for constant human intervention. Until AI can overcome hallucinations and unpredictability, it will remain more of a supplementary tool rather than the autonomous assistant that many envision.

Ensuring that AI systems are trained on high-quality, diverse data sets, and developing methods for greater transparency in AI decision-making, will be essential steps in addressing these concerns and building trust in AI-based educational tools. This drawback not only undermines trust but also erodes the time-savings advantage that artificial intelligence offers. Naturally, any user would want a turnkey solution.
